Top 10 Ways to Deter Watch Theft
High value watches are a common target for burglaries, robberies, and grab-and-run thefts. Why are they such a target? Demand for high value watches like Rolex, Patek Philippe and Breitling is high, and they are relatively easy to sell on the black market. And while enclosed malls may seem less likely to be a target, they are definitely not immune.
1. USE AN ARMED GUARD DURING STORE HOURS
During store hours, especially during busy holiday seasons, consider using an armed guard on premises. The guard’s focus should be on groups entering and exiting the store, guests with large bags or other places to hide stolen merchandise, and guests who seem out of character for the usual customer profile. While locked door buzzers can be effective, these can easily be defeated by a small gang of thieves
2. PROTECT HIGH VALUE MERCHANDISE BY ADDING LAMINATE TO SHOWCASES.
In a robbery, the laminate will slow down or even discourage robbers.
3. SPREAD HIGH-END WATCHES AND MERCHANDISE AMONG SEVERAL SHOWCASES.
This avoids the concentration of large exposures in any one showcase.
4. PLACE HIGHER-VALUED GOODS TOWARDS THE BACK OF THE STORE.
Deters would-be thieves from “grab and run” thefts
5. SHOW ONLY ONE PIECE AT A TIME.
Reduces the potential for loss to only one piece and removes a potential distraction when multiple pieces are being viewed. Blame your insurance company for any inconvenience!
6. ASK FOR PHOTO ID OR USE A PRIVATE ROOM when allowing customers to try on high-value merchandise. It deters would-be thieves from grab and run. And again, blaming your insurance company for the inconvenience is perfectly fine!
7. USE A BURGLARY RATED VAULT OR SAFE to secure all high-end jewelry and watches when the premise is closed or unattended.
8. INSTALL HIGH-RESOLUTION, CLOSED-CIRCUIT TV CAMERAS WITH BACKUP DVR.
The costs are reasonable and video recording can assist law enforcement in capturing the thieves. Make sure that cameras are focused on key areas and that recordings are clear.
9. INSTRUCT STAFF ON HOW TO SPOT AND DETER SUSPICIOUS SITUATIONS.
Train staff on how to spot aggressive or nervous behavior. This may be the first clue that a crime is about to occur. When a suspicious situation does arise, staff members should use a code word or phrase that prompts one employee to leave through the front door with a cell phone – in clear view. Showcases should be locked and additional staff members should be present on the showroom floor. This may be enough to deter a potential theft.
10. REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT IMMEDIATELY.
Share the information with other local jewelers.
